Carol Mabry
Carol J. Mabry, Spartanburg, SC has proudly served as a board member of The Vision Institute of SC for seven (7) years. She earned a BA degree in Deaf Education from Converse College and an MS degree in Deaf Education from the University of Tennessee. She also graduated from a specialized program in interpreter training at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY. She completed coursework and certifications in the areas of Strategic Planning, Leadership, Management and Supervisory Training.
Her professional experience includes thirty-one (31) years of service at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind in a variety of positions. She began as a teacher of students who were deaf-blind and then as a teacher of deaf high school students. After five (5) years of teaching, Carol then began her twenty six (26) year career as an agency administrator. She was appointed as the first statewide director of Early Intervention. The program served infants/toddlers with sensory disability (deaf, blind & deaf-blind) and their families across South Carolina. She then served as an Assistant Principal, Preschool through Middle School, Special Assistant to the President, Vice President and Interim President. As Special Assistant and Vice President, she was responsible for supervision of various on-campus programs and the development and expansion of Outreach services and programs throughout the state. Outreach Services, comprised of approximately 20 programs and projects, focused on high quality services for infants, toddlers, school age children, adults and customers who were blind/visually impaired, deaf/hard of hearing or deaf-blind and the professionals who served them throughout South Carolina. The Division of Outreach Services served several thousand customers annually and provided services in each of the state's 46 counties. During her administrative career, she also served as an adjunct professor at Converse College, sign language instructor and certified interpreter of the deaf.
Carol, upon her retirement, currently enjoys playing the piano, riding motorcycles, cooking and spending time with family and a host of friends. She serves on several community boards and is an active volunteer in local efforts that serve veterans in need and families who are temporarily homeless.
